Taking a Dog or Cat to Canada from the UK:
Pet Travel Guide

Travelling to Canada with your pet is often more straightforward than many other destinations, and in most cases, an Export Health Certificate is not required. The key is understanding exactly what applies to your specific journey and getting the timing right. This step-by-step guide will walk you through everything you need, so you only complete thepaperwork that is actually required.

Confirm your travel requirements

Most pets travelling from the UK to Canada do not require an Export Health Certificate (EHC) if they are travelling with their owner for non-commercial purposes and have a valid rabies
vaccination.

If your pet is travelling unaccompanied, commercially, or without a valid rabies vaccination, EHC 2923 may be required. We'll confirm the correct route before you book.

Check your rabies documents & travel plans

Your pet must have a valid rabies vaccination certificate with accurate identification details.

Before booking appointments, also confirm:

  • Your travel date

  • Your flight route (including any transit countries)

  • Whether your pet is travelling with you or separately

Transit through other countries can create additional paperwork requirements.

Book your flight

Once your travel requirements are confirmed, arrange your pet's flight and check:

  • Airline pet policies

  • Cabin, baggage, or cargo travel

  • Crate and breed restrictions

  • Whether your airline requires a Fit to Fly Certificate or any other veterinary documentation

Book your veterinary appointment

The timing depends on the documentation required:

  • Fit to Fly Certificate: usually within 5 days of travel

  • EHC 2923: final examination within 72 hours of departure

At your appointment, we'll examine your pet, verify your documents, and complete the required certificate(s).
