Microchip & Rabies Vaccination

Your pet must have an ISO-compliant microchip and a valid rabies vaccination before travelling to the USA.

In most cases:

  • Rabies should be given at least 30 days before travel

  • Your pet should be microchipped before vaccination

We recommend checking all records with your regular vet early.

Confirm Your Travel Plans

Before starting the paperwork, confirm:

  • Your destination state (some states have additional rules)

  • Your travel route, including transit countries

  • Whether your pet is travelling cabin, cargo, or private charter

This helps determine exactly what documents are required.

Complete Required Import Paperwork

If travelling with a dog, you must complete the CDC Dog Import Form before entering the USA.

If your dog has recently travelled through a high rabies-risk country, additional requirements may apply.

Obtain the Correct Travel Certificate

Most pets travelling to the USA require a Fit to Fly Certificate issued shortly before travel.

However, some states (such as Hawaii and Massachusetts) require an official Export Health Certificate (EHC) instead.

We confirm exactly which certificate your journey requires.

Final Veterinary Appointment

Shortly before departure, we carry out the final appointment to:

  • Perform a clinical examination

  • Verify the microchip

  • Issue the required certificate

We offer convenient home visits across London to complete this for you.

Travel & Return Preparation

Before travelling, check your airline requirements, ensure you have all paperwork ready, and prepare your pet for the journey.

If returning to the UK later, remember you will need a GB Health Certificate, valid rabies vaccination, and tapeworm treatment for dogs before re-entry.
