Pet travel from the UK to China:
 Dog & Cat import requirements

Step 1: Ensure your pet is microchipped


Your pet should be fitted with a working microchip before beginning the export process.


The microchip number should match all documentation, including:

  • Vaccination records

  • Export paperwork

  • Airline documentation


We always recommend checking the microchip well in advance of travel to avoid delays during certification.



Step 2: Rabies vaccination


China requires all dogs and cats entering the country to have a valid rabies vaccination.


The vaccination must:

  • Be administered according to the manufacturer's guidelines.

  • Remain valid on the date of travel.

  • Be recorded on an official rabies vaccination certificate.


The following information should be included on the certificate:

  • Date of vaccination

  • Vaccine name

  • Manufacturer

  • Batch or lot number


⚠️ The original rabies certificate must accompany the Export Health Certificate.



Step 3: Confirm your travel plans


Before arranging your appointment, it is important to confirm:

  • Your departure date

  • Your destination airport

  • Your airline

  • Any transit countries


Some countries require additional documentation, even if you remain airside during your journey.

Step 4: Export Health Certificate (EHC 8902)


China requires an EHC 8902 Export Health Certificate, which must be completed by an Official Veterinarian.


During the appointment, we will:

  • Verify your pet's identity and microchip number.

  • Review the rabies vaccination documentation.

  • Perform a clinical examination.

  • Complete the official export paperwork.


The certificate also requires the passport number of the owner and, where applicable, the person transporting the animal. This must be issued within the 14 days before export.



Step 5: Clinical examination


Your pet must undergo a veterinary examination before travelling.


The Official Veterinarian will confirm that your pet:

  • Is clinically healthy.

  • Shows no signs of rabies.

  • Shows no signs of infectious or contagious disease.

  • Is fit to travel.

Step 6: Airline requirements and Fit to Fly certificates


Some airlines require an additional Fit to Fly certificate.


Airlines may also have their own rules relating to:

  • Approved travel crates

  • Brachycephalic (flat-faced) breeds

  • Weight limits

  • Cabin and cargo transport


Always check these requirements directly with your airline before travelling.



Step 7: Travel to China


Your pet should travel with the following original documents:


Chinese authorities will inspect your documentation on arrival.
