Pet Travel from the UK to Qatar: Dog & Cat Import Requirements

Step 1 — Confirm Eligibility First


Before starting paperwork, confirm:

  • Your pet is at least 4 months old at the time of travel

  • Your breed is permitted — large or dangerous dog breeds require a special permit from the Qatari Ministry of Interior

  • The following breeds of dogs are banned from entering Qatar:

    • American Staffordshire Terrier

    • Boerboel

    • Boston Terrier

    • Boxer

    • Bull Terrier

    • Bulldog

    • Chinese Shar-Pei

    • Doberman

    • Great Dane

    • Japanese Akita

    • Neapolitan Mastiff

    • Afghan Hound

    • Rottweiler

    • Staffordshire Bull Terrier

  • You are able to obtain a Qatar import permit (mandatory for all dogs and cats)


If you’re unsure about breed classification, airline restrictions, or permit category, check this early — it can block travel.



Step 2 — Microchip Identification


Your pet must be:

  • Microchipped with an ISO-compliant microchip

  • Microchipped before rabies vaccination used for travel

  • Microchip number must match across:

    • vaccination records

    • lab documents (if applicable)

    • Export Health Certificate

    • import permit

Mismatch = certification failure risk.



Step 3 — Rabies Vaccination Requirements


Rabies vaccination is mandatory for Qatar entry.


The rabies vaccine must:

  • Be given by a veterinarian

  • Be in date at the time of export

  • Be recorded on a formal vaccination certificate showing:

    • vaccine name

    • batch number

    • date of manufacture

    • expiry date

    • vaccination date

    • microchip number


Do not rely on incomplete vaccine cards — Qatar certification is detail-sensitive.

Step 4 — Apply for the Qatar Import Permit (Do This Early)


A Qatar import permit is required before travel.


The permit is issued by Qatar’s animal health authorities and is typically applied for by:

  • the owner, or

  • an import agent in Qatar


You should apply well in advance of your intended travel date, as the EHC must match the permit details exactly, apply here.


This permit is valid for 30 days.



Step 5 — Owner Declaration (Age Confirmation)


For EHC 3920, the owner must sign a declaration confirming:

  • The animal is at least 4 months old

This declaration is:

  • Provided to the Official Veterinarian

  • Retained with the certification records

  • Checked if there is any doubt about age

Step 6 — Plan Your Flight Before Final Certification


Before your final vet certification visit, confirm:

  • Airline acceptance of pets to Qatar

  • Cargo vs manifest requirements

  • Crate size and IATA compliance

  • Breed restrictions (some airlines are stricter than Qatar itself)

Step 7 — Request Your Export Health Certificate (EHC 3920)


The Export Health Certificate is issued via the UK government system and must be completed by an Official Veterinarian (OV).


Best practice timing:

  • Request your EHC once:

    • your import permit is approved

    • your travel date is fixed

    • rabies vaccination is valid and documented

Step 8 — Final Veterinary Examination (Within 48 Hours of Export)


Your pet must undergo a final clinical examination by an Official Veterinarian within 48 hours of departure before the Export Health Certificate is signed.


At this appointment, the OV will:

  • Perform a full clinical examination

  • Confirm your pet shows no signs of infectious or contagious disease

  • Specifically check for signs consistent with:

    • rabies

    • distemper

    • other contagious illness

  • Check for external parasites (such as ticks or fleas)

  • Confirm your pet is fit to travel


If all requirements are met, the Official Veterinarian will complete and sign the final Export Health Certificate for Qatar.


Planning tip: Because this must fall inside a strict 48-hour window, flight timing should be confirmed in advance so the EHC appointment can be scheduled correctly.



Step 9 — Travel Day Requirements


On travel day:

  • Use an IATA-compliant crate

  • Follow airline welfare and loading rules

  • Carry originals of:

    • Import permit

    • Export Health Certificate

    • Rabies vaccination certificate

    • Supporting documents

Transport must comply with UK and airline animal welfare transport law.
