Pet Travel from UK to Egypt: Dog & Cat Import Requirements

Step 1 - Make sure your pet is microchipped

Your pet should have an ISO 11784/11785 compliant microchip.

The microchip should be readable and its number should match all supporting veterinary documentation, including the rabies vaccination record and Export Health Certificate.

Step 2 - Check the rabies vaccination

Your pet must have a valid rabies vaccination that was administered:

• more than 1 month before the date of export, and

• less than 12 months before the date of export.

It is important to check the exact vaccination date against the intended travel date before booking the final appointment.

You should also keep the original rabies vaccination certificate or other veterinary evidence showing the vaccination details.

Step 3 - Keep routine vaccinations and parasite treatment up to date

Although these are separate from the core export requirements above, we would strongly recommend that pets travelling internationally are fully up to date with their routine core vaccinations and appropriate internal and external parasite treatment before travelling.

This is particularly sensible when travelling to a different disease environment.

Step 4 - Complete the required owner declaration

The owner will need to sign a declaration confirming that:

• the animal is being exported from the UK, and

• the animal has not been imported into the UK during the previous 6 months.

This declaration forms part of the documentation required for the export process.

Step 5 - Arrange the final veterinary examination

Your pet must undergo a physical veterinary examination within 96 hours of export.

During this appointment, the vet will assess the pet and confirm that they are clinically fit for travel and meet the relevant health requirements.

The Export Health Certificate can then be completed and signed where all requirements have been met.

Step 6 - Complete the Export Health Certificate

The appropriate Export Health Certificate (EHC) must be completed by an authorised Official Veterinarian.

At the appointment, you should have the original supporting documentation available, particularly:

• rabies vaccination evidence

• microchip details

• owner/exporter information

• travel details

• signed owner declaration

Step 7 - Arrange legalisation of the certificate

Once the EHC has been completed and signed, the documentation then needs to be legalised by the relevant UK authorities and the Egyptian Consulate before travel.

Because the physical examination must take place within 96 hours of export while legalisation also takes time, careful scheduling is important.

A practical option is to book a Friday flight, allowing the EHC examination and certification to take place on the Monday. This provides several working days to complete the necessary legalisation before departure.

We would recommend confirming legalisation turnaround times before finalising flights, particularly around bank holidays or other periods when processing times may be affected.

Step 8 - Commercial imports may have additional requirements

Animals being imported into Egypt from breeders for commercial purposes may be subject to a 15-day quarantine period.

Commercial movements should therefore be assessed separately from normal accompanied pet travel, as additional requirements may apply.
